Humanity changed.
The process was slow, and it began subtly. Mutations of the mind, like telekinesis, or mutations of the body, giving things like superior strength, speed, and senses. Things that could be easily hidden... controlled.
The mutations continued, abilities became less subtle. Toddlers threw a temper tantrum and set houses on fire. Parents would walk into their child's bedroom to find small animals playing with their toys.
There were those of us born into families that were scared at first, but learned to deal with the changes, learned to help their children find some semblance of control. Few of us were that lucky.
When the humans found out about us there was chaos. There were discussions everywhere about "what to do" with us. Some thought it would be best to kill us off, take the world back to burning witches. Others thought we should be quarantined, as if whatever it was that made us different was some sort of contagious disease... Idiots.
The rare few who disagreed with them all, they thought we should be allowed to live among others, the same way we were born among them; luckily for us those that believed that had power, well politically anyway.
A compromise was made.
A school was created, a place where they could send us all off far far away from society to be trained, to learn from the others how to control our abilities. The eldest among us, the ones with the more subtle powers, or those raised by them, became teachers, coaches, and they helped guide us.
Because of the elders that had worked their way up into political and justice systems, the place where they sent us "for our safety" was not with out its, uh, perks, if you will.
The designated area for the school was beautiful if nothing else. Thousands of acres of beautiful green forested area surrounded by a beautiful crescent shaped mountain range. The school was on the inside of the range, in the valleys that sloped down to the water.
Luckily for us, once the location was decided, we were responsible for building the school. Of course we gave the appearance of an actual boarding school, with classrooms a gym, a library and a cafeteria, but we added a few things you don't find in your average boarding school. Because of our location in the mountains, we were able to find a beautiful natural hot spring that we converted into a rustic spa. There was of course the large freshwater lake that was fed by snow melt from the mountains, but if you walked far enough, or flew.. depending on the person, you could enjoy the sandy beach too.
In the center of campus there was a huge gathering tree, hard to miss, that we used for many things, from classes to partying not only because the sheer size and beauty of the tree made it an easy place to reach, but also because of the magical noise the leaves made when blown by the wind, like mother nature was singing a song to welcome us. The importance of this tree is what gave the school it's name, Windsong Academy.
What some had expected to be basically a concentration camp for the gifted had become a paradise for those of us that society rejected.
We have taken what was supposed to be a camp to keep us away from normal humans and turned it into a safe haven for anyone who was gifted.
When it became known among the gifted population that there really was a safe place to escape to, others began to seek the comfort of Windsong Academy. These 'others' were still secret to society, beings like Demons, and Fae that wished not to have to hide among the populace any longer, but that wanted the freedom that we had. They remained a secret to society, but among us, there were accepted... for the most part.
Some came at a very young age, others didn't come into their abilities until later in life, all were welcomed, and all were trained. When your powers were under control and you graduated from the academy, you were allowed to leave. Some did. Most stay, build homes, start families, become teachers. Not many were willing to leave the home they had formed.

Note: Ruuruu, I thought this would be a good first post for the topic, so that anyone who wants to join but wasn't in the "seeking roleplay" board knows what the story is. I hope you don't mind, and if you do, feel free to change it.
